Studio Visit: Ludo – Chaos Theory (Paris)

Ludo - Chaos Theory

We visited the studio of French artist Ludo in Paris as he prepares for his London solo show Chaos Theory at Lazarides Rathbone.

Using his trademark neon green and monochrome palette, Ludo’s new body of work illustrates themes of dissolute time and resolute chaos, through a battalion of futuristic mechanical butterflies.

Blending nature and human technology with anatomical and technical precision, Ludo references the accelerated pace of life in which people continually strive to keep up with the ongoing race against the clock. The frail and ephemeral butterfly image is reincarnated into hybrid creatures that possess strength and durability reminiscent of combat weaponry: the Butterfly effect.

London: Hysteria @ Maison Bertaux

Hysteria

Ahead of their upcoming exhibition opening on March 12th at the legendary patisserie and gallery, Maison Bertaux, in Soho, London, we met up with the all girl collective HYSTERIA in their Hastings studio. Made up of Collagism, Aida Wilde and Shuby, the UK based collective creates colourful artworks  featuring eggs, legs, bananas, bunnies, cats, cupcakes, jewellery and bold iconography using mixed media collage and screenprinting techniques.

Their new body of work explores their relationship between food, sex, gender and symbolism. Their interpretation of celebrity subversion devours pop culture serving it up in as explosive dish of delectable proportions. Spanned across two floors, the exhibition promises riotous visual misconduct and infamous bad behavior using mainstream, historical and religious imagery all to be enjoyed with the sumptuous taste of Maison Bertaux’s legendary tea and cakes. Throughout the tenure of the show,  the Hysteria crew will be running a series of workshops and High Tea events, giving visitors and insight into their collaborative workings.

Known for his large scale charcoal photorealistic portraits on buildings since the 90s,  Jorge will be presenting a new solo show in Paris  at Mathgoth gallery on 11 October called TEXTURE URBAINE.

Studio Visits: BLO (Berlin)

BLO

We visited the studio of French graffiti artist BLO, based in Berlin, as he prepares for his upcoming solo show “La Petite Mort” at Open Walls Gallery opening tonight.

La Petite Mort examines euphoric isolation of the artist, steeped in BLO’s past movements throughout the public sphere, from 1998 in the French Graffiti scene. This show has all the destructive elements of his youth – yet now he attacks his symbolic ancestors, from the Virgin Mary and Child to the Bleeding Heart.

BLO BLO

BLO (DMV) works with many juxtapositions in his dream-like images of damage. Negating the iconic pin-up of the graffiti scene, he labours intensively over androgynous women with mechanical limbs and lead pipe bones. The sculptural curves of the paintings mirror the heavy reflex of gesture seen in the other monochrome illustrations, that are ripped from their static respite to play on a series of wooden panels and stretched cotton throughout the show.

Studio Visits: Hisham Echafaki

Hisham Echafaki

We recently had the chance to visit pop-surrealist painter Hisham Echafaki‘s studio. Using acrylic and oil paint, the London-based artist loves exploring symetry and patterns, as well as depicting animals in a surreal environment, as shown in his kufic and butterflies series.

We were fortunate to document some of the painting process of his Anthropomorphic Bowie pieces as he prepared for the upcoming group show The Many Faces of David Bowie at the Opera Gallery London.
