London: Conor Harrington ‘ Watch Your Palace Fall’

Conor Harrington - Watch Your Palace Fall

After nine months of preparation,  Irish born, London based artist Conor Harrington is presenting a new solo exhibition Watch Your Palace Fall at Pace Gallery London in Soho.

Continuing his narrative of politically charged oil paintings, Conor Harrington depicts fights between military male characters dressed in 18th century uniforms, with all the rage and thirst for power.

The chase for power is certainly timeless and draws references to the contemporary political climate, as illustrated in Sluggers Paradise (2016), a large diptych featuring a tug of war and coloured to represent the classic blue and red of opposing political parties.

Amongst the eleven new canvases, six of them feature a ‘ Golden Mask’, a recurring theme in Conor Harrington’s body of work, where the portrait explores his alter ego.

“These paintings are a nod to political deceit, the lies and half truths told to assume a role and gain power, the prevalence of social media selves at the expense of the real self and the graffiti alter ego, acquiring a pseudonym and hiding your true identity.” – Conor Harrington, August 2016.

Guests at the opening were also happy to taste beer with customised labels and browse in advance through the upcoming monograph Conor Harrington: Watch Your Palace Fall by HENI Publishing, a retrospective of Conor Harrington’s painting career.

Officially released on  27 October 2016, you can preorder a copy HERE.  A book launch event & signing event will be hosted on Sunday 2 October 2016, 11:30–2pm.

Eager visitors were flicking through the first editions of the Catalogue Raisonné in advance of the global release on 30th June 2016. Published globally by The Estate of Francis Bacon, Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonné is a landmark publishing event that presents the entire oeuvre of Bacon’s paintings for the first time and includes many previously unpublished works.

The impeccably produced five-volume, slipcased publication, containing each of Bacon’s 584 paintings, has been edited by Martin Harrison FSA, the pre-eminent expert on Bacon’s work, alongside research assistant Dr Rebecca Daniels. An ambitious and painstaking project that has been over ten years in the making, this seminal visual document eclipses in scope any previous publication on the artist and will have a profound effect on the perception of his work.

In addition to the 584 paintings, the catalogue contains illuminating supporting material, from sketches by Bacon, photographs of early states of paintings, images of Bacon’s furniture, hand-written notes by the artist, photographs of Bacon, his family and circle to fascinating x-ray and microscope photography of his paintings.

Streets: Tracing Morocco with Hendrik ECB Beikirch

Hendrik Beikirch aka ECB - Tracing Marocco

We first encountered the work of German artist Hendrik Beikirch aka ECB last year in Toulouse where he completed a large scale monochrome portrait of a Maroccan woman for Mr Freeze Festival (covered).

This was part of a series entitled Tracing Morocco’, following  an artistic residency at Jardin Rouge in collaboration with the Montresso Foundationduring which he created 22 portraits, paying tribute to those anonymous Moroccans craftsmen and women he met during his travels, emphasising these fascinating encounters through portraiture.

Many of these portraits were also painted as large scale murals in New York, Roma, Copenhagen, Oslo, Murmansk, Toulouse, Naestved, Paris etc.

Hendrick ECB Beikirch recently returned to Marrakech to reveal the different artworks and completed additional murals.

Unveiled for the Marrakech Biennale, the latest mural  is an hommage to Aziz, a local Marrakchi builder working at Jardin Rouge, who coincidentally worked to repair this exact wall previously. The artwork can be seen across the Marrakech train station.
