We are excited to curate Lusus Naturae, a two-person exhibition with French artists 100TAUR andHisham Echafaki featuring a series of new paintings, drawings and three dimensional works.

In natural history, the latin terminology ‘Lusus Naturae’ is used to describe any creature or specimen that defied classification, an animal or a person that is markedly unusual or a freak of nature.

The show explores notions of anthropomorphism, human fascination with oddities or monstrosities and our fragile relationship with the natural world. 100TAUR’s mythical monsters are portrayed in a surrealist dark enchanted world with colourful details rich in narrative.

Hisham Echafaki’s paintings play with intricate repetitive patterns found in nature and examine the impact that humankind exerts on its fragile balance.

For the first time Hisham Echafaki will also present a series of his three-dimensional paintings. Using a unique technique of resin layering and acrylic paint, the artist meticulously builds layers to create three-dimensional insects in transparent boxes. Oniric butterflies, bees and dragonflies appear to be suspended and preserved in the manner of fragile taxidermy insects.

Release: Nick Walker – The Last Ride Print

Nick Walker (check the studio visit here) will have a new print on sale on Monday 12th October at 3.30pm DST UK time, entitled The Last Ride.

The print is based on a portrait I took of the UK artist during a visit in Paris. He’s wearing his signature Vandal outfit and umbrella while riding a carousel horse next to the Eiffel Tower. A quite surreal experience…

Produced in an edition of 150 on Somerset Satin 410 gms , measuring 66cm x 96 cm, it will be available for £400 online from www.theartofnickwalker.com .

Lisa Wright - The Unversed

Coates & Scarry are currently showing a new body of works ‘The Unversed” by Lisa Wright.

The exhibition features a series of drawings, paper studies and paintings exploring the theme of emotional and physical vulnerability during puberty. Interweaving motifs and ideas from historical paintings with contemporary concerns, Lisa Wright’s work moves between and through different times.

Often isolated, the figures within Wright’s paintings and drawings hover on the brink of adulthood. With puberty, emotions are intensified, the insignificant is magnified and the importance of the presentation of the self, of body image, predominates. Many of the figures are unclothed and adorned with fragment of formal adult, decorative clothing – ribbons, ruffs and petticoats.

They wear simple black or white masks, reminiscent of Venetian carnival masks, emphasising the search for identity and construction of the self. Likewise, the title of the exhibition, ‘The Unversed’, alludes to the figures lacking the language, skills and experience to express themselves or to describe their experiences adequately. Instead, emotions and ideas are untold: lives remaining in a state of anticipation and a state of potential.

Mad C - Character @ Pure Evil

After her first successful solo show in 2011, MadC returns to London‘s Pure Evil Gallery. The title „Character“ sums up MadC‘s work since she started painting graffiti 19 years ago.
A character can be a symbol or a letter, a figure or a person‘s nature. MadC says: „To get somewhere in the graffiti world, you need character. To get known in the graffiti world, you need characters to form a name. To learn how to use a spray can to it‘s full extent, you need to paint characters.“

MadC‘s work has progressed immensely in the last decade. Transparent layers of calligraphy on canvas dominate her work today. The movements are taken from her energetic wildstyle street pieces. „Character“ is the sum up of MadC‘s progress till date and her installations are a glimpse into the artists work in the future.

While in Toulouse, we popped by the studio of French graffiti writer RESO.
His graffiti letters and figurative style have adorned walls of numerous cities across the world for the past 20 years, making him one of the key French writers of his generation.

When RESO is not busy taking a residency in Marrakesh at Jardin Rouge, he also curates with the Faute O Graff organisation recurrent graffiti jams and art exhibitions in Toulouse like Open Summer Festival or Mr Freeze, which is currently running until 3 rd October 2015.
