Vestige - Coates & Scarry

Curated by Coates and Scarry, the group exhibition ‘Vestige’ brings together a new body of works that subtly or overtly reference historical imagery and objects.

Participating artists include Lisa Wright, Emma Vidal, Penny Byrne, Aaron Smith and Henry Hussey.

Merging together fragments of history like ribbons, ruffs, wigs and petticoats, Lisa Wright’s historical portrait paintings and drawings are simultaneously rooted in the past and the present.

Australian artist Penny Byrne transforms porcelain figures with wry humour and gives them a voice, highlighting current political conflicts and protests.

Using charcoal, French artist Emma Vidal creates drawings and three dimensional works with spiritual and cultural symbolism depicting a post-apocalyptic world in ruin.

Inspired by photographic portraits from the Edwardian and Victorian eras, LA based artist Aaron Smith gives a contemporary twist to male portrait paintings. By skilfully layering and interweaving text, imagery together with vintage, hand-dyed, printed fabrics and embroidery, UK artist Henry Hussey creates highly complex and colourful textile works.

Dran - Public Execution Show

Returning to London after five years, the French master draughtsman dran has just launched a new solo show entitled ‘Public Execution‘ . Announced at the last minute on Pictures on Walls, the show ‘ promises to be a ‘live’ masterclass in ‘spontaneous creativity’ happening in ‘real time’. All of which actually means he hasn’t done much yet. Over the next three weeks dran will be creating an art show from scratch in full public view in an empty shop in Soho. Upon completion it will close immediately.
The public are invited to visit at any time, but may not always be welcome.’

Despite the last minute announcement, eager fans came in force to the opening, and were welcome with enormous cheese platters, wine and beers. Sitting behind a broken laptop and copy machine, a painted female assistant is greeting visitors. Next to her features a canvas of a little boy dressed up in shiny costume made of snack packaging. Guests are invited to put bids and comments to get it. And so far the walls are covered with painted blank frames. So we’ll see how the show will evolve and what surprises lay in store.

Legendary New York based artist Ron English is currently in London for a series of events. Artrepublic is showing at Boxpark a retrospective of his famous works like Marilyn Monroe with Mickey Mouse breasts, the corpulent fast food spokesman MC Supersized, or Abraham Obama. In parallel we will see the exclusive launch of the Camo Deer Print. See more details here.

London: Mapping the City – Somerset House

Following the success of the 2014 exhibition Futurismo Ancestral: An Offering to Peru by Sixe Paredes (featured here), the collaborative arts organisation Approved by Pablo is curating a new exhibition entitled ‘Mapping the City‘ at Somerset House in London.

Over 50 internationally recognised artists from the street art and graffiti scene including Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Swoon, Momo, Remed take over the New Wing of Somerset House to share their knowledge of each city’s secrets and urban landscape through a variety of media from illustrations, paintings, sculptures, installations and videos.
