London: David Bray – Wrong Turn @ Stolenspace

David Bray - Wrong Turn

Gallery One at StolenSpace is currently showing a new body of works by British artist David Bray in a solo exhibition titled ‘Wrong Turn‘. Featuring works on wood with paint, pen and pencil with frames using reclaimed wood, the imagery is heavily influenced by hand poked tattoos, simple line drawings and erotic ladies, but also inspired by Eric Gill, James Ensor, Eric Stanton, Bart Simpson as well as ancient Greece. David Bray explains that many of the images comes from getting lost in America when on a trip with musician Georg Lubitzer, which in turn led them to meet someone called Yossarian who gave the artist names, subjects and compositions that he should use.

London: Slinkachu – Miniaturesque @ Andipa

Slinkachu - Miniaturesque

Since 2006 street artist Slinkachu has been abandoning his miniature people in the streets and has taken in-situ photographs creating a new narrative. Andipa Gallery is presenting a major new exhibition called Miniaturesque.

Shot in London during different seasons over the past year, Slinkachu’s new body of work draws upon our desire to seek out and recreate the natural world amongst the urban metropolis with a certain dose of irony. His miniature people, photographed on the streets of London and then left in situ – or ‘abandoned’ – by the artist, explore the hidden enclaves of the wild within our city.

The show features seventeen new images on paper and aluminium as well as new sculptural pieces, including Slinkachu’s biggest yet with over 200 miniature figures in a recreation of The River Thames.

London: Sotheby’s Bear Witness Auction

Sotheby's - Bear Witness Auction

For their upcoming auction ‘Bear Witness‘, Sotheby’s has been turned into a giant party house inside out. The facade is ornated by a giant bear neon sign, and even the wallpaper and walls have been redecorated with bear patterns.  Sothebys wanted to recreate the house of an eccentric collector who gathered one of the most extraordinary collections to have ever been assembled, and acquired over decades since 1976.

Bear Witness features a wonderland of astonishing art and curious artefacts with major works by the pioneers of post-war and contemporary art alongside countless artefacts, curiosities and objets d’art drawn from across the globe. From Warhol, Haring, Koons, YBAs like Hirst, Chapman Brothers to Renaissance era marble skulls, Art Deco sculptures and 19th-century theatrical props – from the classical to the kitsch – it is a collection with no parallel or precedent.

The collection is unified by two recurring motifs – the bear, symbol of power, strengh and life, and the skull, a reminder of our own mortality, a memento mori.

Three sales will take place over three consecutive days, culminating with the first, and most probably only, dedicated “Bears & Skulls” auction on 12 March. The sheer breadth and diversity of the works on offer is reflected in their estimates, which range from as little as £20 to in excess of £2,000,000.
