London: Katrin Fridriks – Macrocosm

Katrin Fridriks - Marcrocosm

Icelandic conceptual artist and abstract painter Katrin Fridriks returns to Lazarides Rathbone in London for a new solo exhibition entitled ‘Macrocosm‘.

Alongside the 2014 installation Perception of the Stendhal Syndrome – Gene&Ethics Master Prism with a giant magnifying glass, the exhibition  features a whole new body of works, with canvasses bursting with vibrant and swirling energetic coloured shapes of splashing paint.

The role of the magnifying glass is to enhance the intensity of the experience of being overwhelmed by the artwork, evoking a phenomenon that is called “beauty nausea”.

The two dichotomies contained within the gallery space represent the elusive philosophical idea of macrocosm with one canvas being a micro particle of the other.  ‘Macrocosm’, originating from Ancient Greek philosophy, refers to everything that exists, an infinite, complex structure that can be regarded as a universe, or the cosmos. The microcosm, however, is just a small representative part of it. Since the time of Plato, human imagination has been drawn to an idea of an analogy between the macro and the microcosm. Thus ‘as above, so below’ was a leading motto in the doctrine of ‘correspondences’ between the two dimensions.

The spatial arrangement of this show invites viewers to participate, to adopt various viewpoints, and to discover new perspectives and hidden depths within the paint through the magnifying glass.

London: Maser – Orbiting on the Periphery @ Lazarides Rathbone

Maser: Orbiting on the Periphery

Irish graffiti artist Maser stages his first solo show entitled ‘Orbiting on the Periphery‘ at Lazarides Rathbone in London.

‘Orbiting on the Periphery‘ continues Masers’ exploration into the philosopher and mathematician Thales of Miletus’s theory ; “mens sana in corpore sano,” in which physical health and condition are recognised as an essential part of psychological equilibrium.

With strong use of bold graphic and geometric elements, loose brush strokes and relief work, the exhibition focuses on Masers’s interest in duality and the thought-provoking relationship between the physical and psychological.
Combining his graffiti experience with his formal art education Maser has developed a singular body of work, balancing hard-edged blocks of neon colour that congeal into expressive, figurative compositions.

London – Todd James ‘Fantasy Island’ @ Lazarides

Todd James - Fantasy Island

New York artist Todd James a.k.a. REAS, is showing his new works at London’s Lazarides. The exhibition entitled Fantasy Island explores the grotesque of socio-political news we receive, between images of war, somali pirates, UN soldiers and scantily-clad females posing on the cover of fashion magazines.

Using vibrant colours, Todd James’ paintings feature an army of multicolored AK47, armed soldiers balancing cup of teas in armchairs, while his oversexualised blonde female portraits are reminiscent of Wesselman.

In parallel to the gallery exhibition, guests could also enjoy his infamous Vandal’s Bedroom recreated in a vintage Chevrolet.

Fantasy Island in Lazarides Gallery runs until 28th May 2015.

The show reflects on how various factors compose the contemporary urbanised world that is shaping its inhabitants, while personal identities are vanishing under the visual urban noise and surrounding clutter.

The subjects being portrayed disappear through multiple layering of billboards and stratification on metal and wood.
