London: YZ – Lost in the City

Yz - Lost in the City

Lost in the city’ is the first solo show by French street artist YZ in the gallery frenchartstudio in London.

YZ questions the duality of two cities from an architectural perspective, Paris vs Hong Kong through a series of monochrome artworks depicting architectural elements such as facades, monuments, ornaments and highlights what make them such unique and fascinating places. Going further, YZ integrates classic architectural elements from Paris into Asiatic traditional run downed surroundings to create great aesthetical harmony.

London: Rafael Gómezbarros @ Saatchi Gallery

Rafael Gomezbarros

Columbian artist and sculptor Rafael Gómezbarros has brought his army of giant ants to Saatchi Gallery. Titled “Casa Tomada”, (Seized House), the ants represent the displacement of columbian peasants due to war and strife. Spreading aggressively over all the walls, these 2 feet sculptures made of fiberglass are taking power .

Gómezbarros previously deployed his legion of ants onto historical buildings such as Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino – the haçienda where Simón Bolívar spent his final days – as well as Barranquilla’s customs building.

Ants being usually associated with hard labour and a complex social organization are turned into phantasms of the disappeared, ghost like figures that have acquired the capacity to take over national monuments.

Streets: Banksy #withSyria

#Syria - Banksy London
To mark the third anniversay of the Syrian conflict, Banksy has reworked his iconic portrait of a girl with heart balloon, to depict a young Syrian refugee wih a head scarf.
A “global recreation” of the moving Banksy piece saw the release of red balloons en masse around the world while the stencil have been projected on major landmarks, like the Nelson Column in Trafalgar Square in London, or the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

On his website the following statement reads:

“On the 6 March 2011 in the Syrian town of Daraa, fifteen children were arrested and tortured for painting anti-authoritarian graffiti. The protests that followed their detention led to an outbreak of violence across the country that would see a domestic uprising transform into a civil war displacing 9.3 million people from their homes.

London: Hysteria @ Maison Bertaux

Hysteria

Ahead of their upcoming exhibition opening on March 12th at the legendary patisserie and gallery, Maison Bertaux, in Soho, London, we met up with the all girl collective HYSTERIA in their Hastings studio. Made up of Collagism, Aida Wilde and Shuby, the UK based collective creates colourful artworks  featuring eggs, legs, bananas, bunnies, cats, cupcakes, jewellery and bold iconography using mixed media collage and screenprinting techniques.

Their new body of work explores their relationship between food, sex, gender and symbolism. Their interpretation of celebrity subversion devours pop culture serving it up in as explosive dish of delectable proportions. Spanned across two floors, the exhibition promises riotous visual misconduct and infamous bad behavior using mainstream, historical and religious imagery all to be enjoyed with the sumptuous taste of Maison Bertaux’s legendary tea and cakes. Throughout the tenure of the show,  the Hysteria crew will be running a series of workshops and High Tea events, giving visitors and insight into their collaborative workings.
