Paris: (OFF)ICIELLE Art Fair

L'(OFF)ICIELLE - Paris

After the art week in London ( covered here), Paris is hosting a series of art fairs and events. (OFF)ICIELLE, FIAC’s new event, is held from 22 to 26 October at Les Docks – Cité de la Mode et du Design. The satellite fair is featuring 68 galleries from 14 different countries, specializing in contemporary and emerging art, from young galleries and newcomers to the international art scene.

Some highlights include a flying carpet by Moussa Sarr, a poem within an ice cube by Paula Doepfner, a burnt canvas ‘Bordeline’ by Sonne Kasper,  a taxidermist bear by Abraham Pointcheval and a monochromie series by Esther Stocker.  Artist Ofri Cnaani was doing a non-stop-performance with the participation of the visitors.

Studio Visit: 100TAUR (Toulouse)

100TAUR - Studio Visit

Following his group shows in the US and recent installation at the Toulouse Museum (FR), we visited the cabinet of curiosities of Low Brow French artist 100taur as he prepares for his upcoming solo show ‘Monsters in my closet’ at the Artoyz gallery in Paris.

100taur is a multidisciplinary artist, whose creativity expands from graffiti, paintings, drawings, engraving to sculpture, installations and taxidermy. His sources of inspiration come from Greek mythology, hybrid creatures like Chiron, known for his kindness, knowledge and skills with medicine, but also Japanese culture and sci-fi and horror films. Passionate by the natural world, 100taur also studies and breeds insects that he draws with the ultimate details.

100taur’s fantastic world is full of happy monsters, multi-eyed slugs and hybrid creatures that seems to be floating and dancing within an oniric universe, while some pop classics like Sponge Bob are  reinterpreted with his own personal touch.

Streets: Paris Nuit Blanche 2014 – Part 1

Tristan Eaton - Nuit Blanche Paris 2014

While usually artworks during the Nuit Blanche only last one night, this year selected artists have been invited to create long term works. We caught up with some of them as they prepare for the big night.  Large scale murals are being painted  throughout the 13th District like Borondo (covered here). ‘THE REVOLUTION WILL BE TRIVIALIZED’ by Tristan Eaton is a tongue in cheek play on the famous Gil Scott Heron quote: ‘The revolution will not be televised’. “In a time when protests are becoming the norm from Ferguson to Hong Kong and beyond, it’s easy to see how civil unrest is often co-opted, undermined or diluted by the opportunistic.”

Spanish art activist SpY ( which we saw at Nuart earlier) is creating a large scale slogan in UV light “I’M NOT A REAL ARTIST”.

Studio Visit: Ludo – Chaos Theory (Paris)

Ludo - Chaos Theory

We visited the studio of French artist Ludo in Paris as he prepares for his London solo show Chaos Theory at Lazarides Rathbone.

Using his trademark neon green and monochrome palette, Ludo’s new body of work illustrates themes of dissolute time and resolute chaos, through a battalion of futuristic mechanical butterflies.

Blending nature and human technology with anatomical and technical precision, Ludo references the accelerated pace of life in which people continually strive to keep up with the ongoing race against the clock. The frail and ephemeral butterfly image is reincarnated into hybrid creatures that possess strength and durability reminiscent of combat weaponry: the Butterfly effect.
