Malaga: Shepard Fairey – ‘Your Eyes Here’ @CAC Malaga

Los Angeles-based artist Shepard Fairey is having his first solo exhibition in a Spanish museum at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, curated by Fernando Francés. With over 300 pieces, this is the largest body of work from Shepard Fairey to ever be exhibited. The retrospective ‘Your Eyes Here’ spans over 25 years, and features paintings, silkscreens, stencils, stickers, illustrations, collage, photographs, sculptures and works in wood and metal. The show is structured in thematic sections that retrace Fairey’s artistic influences like music, politics – war and peace – and environmental issues. There are also selected examples of his early works, street art and portraits of musicians, artists and activists, as well as an impressive collection of his screenprints, an essential part of his production.

In parallel to the museum exhibition, he and his team also painted a new ‘Mujer Fatal’ mural in the Soho district and some Obey Giant paste up and stencils could be found across the streets of Malaga.

Miami: ‘Heatwave’ – Shepard Fairey & Miami City Ballet

Reminiscent of the roaring 1920’s where artists were heavily influenced by Diaghilev & the Ballets Russes and vice versa, Street Art is now taking a growing place in Contemporary ballets. New York collective Faile and French artist JR (see here) collaborated with the New York City Ballets on numerous occasions.

In an unprecedented world premiere, ballet and guerrilla “street art” collide as US most sought after choreographer Justin Peck and visual artist Shepard Fairey join forces for Heatscape with the Miami City Ballet, an entirely new exploration of movement, music, costuming and art design. The back drop features Obey Giant’s iconography with a mandala and signature colours red / white/ black colours.

London: Mapping the City – Somerset House

Following the success of the 2014 exhibition Futurismo Ancestral: An Offering to Peru by Sixe Paredes (featured here), the collaborative arts organisation Approved by Pablo is curating a new exhibition entitled ‘Mapping the City‘ at Somerset House in London.

Over 50 internationally recognised artists from the street art and graffiti scene including Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Swoon, Momo, Remed take over the New Wing of Somerset House to share their knowledge of each city’s secrets and urban landscape through a variety of media from illustrations, paintings, sculptures, installations and videos.

London: Sound & Vision by Shepard Fairey

Following his solo show at Stolenspace in 2007, Shepard Fairey has returned to London for a major solo show titled Sound & Vision. Featuring new works including mixed media paintings on canvas, works on paper, retired stencils collages, rubylith cuts, and as well as serigraphs on wood, metal and paper.

For the opening Z-Trip created a soundtrack that can be listened here.

In parallel to the show, London have been treated to three new Obey murals and countless paste ups across the streets.

Preview: London Pleasure Gardens

The Paradise Gardens is a free family festival and a feast for all the senses in the new London Pleasure Gardens site. Featuring a vintage fair, performance arts, live music, pyrotechnic galore and all kinds of entertainment, this is definitively a destination for the summer. But a festival wouldn’t be the same without street art and graffiti…

Fresh from Paris, Shepard Fairey and the Obey Giant team finished a large scale mural.

To top it all, celebrated US street and graffiti artists Risk, Ron English and TrustoCorp are joining in and completing outdoor intallations, as part of Letters of America. The project then continues its UK invasion with an all-American Independence Day celebration – in association with Corey Helford Gallery LA on Wednesday, July 4 at Black Rat Gallery.
