Preview: London Pleasure Gardens

London Pleasure Gardens

The Paradise Gardens  is  a free family festival and a feast for all the senses in the new London Pleasure Gardens site. Featuring a vintage fair, performance arts, live music, pyrotechnic galore and all kinds of entertainment, this is definitively a destination for the summer.  But a festival wouldn’t be the same without street art and graffiti…

Fresh from Paris, Shepard Fairey and the Obey Giant team finished a large scale mural.

To top it all, celebrated US street and graffiti artists  Risk, Ron English and TrustoCorp are joining in and completing outdoor intallations, as part of Letters of America. The project then continues its UK invasion with an all-American Independence Day celebration – in association with Corey Helford Gallery LA  on Wednesday, July 4 at Black Rat Gallery.

Paris: Nick Walker TMA

Nick Walker - Paris

To close the loop on a year long project I have been following (covered here) British artist Nick Walker was in Paris for the release of the awaited TMA print, The Morning After, at the Opera Gallery.

Nearby luxury shop owners were shocked to discover people queuing, a first for French people and specially in the most prestigious district of Paris, at the corner of Place Vendome, home to Cartier. “What is going on,  shall we call the police?”.

Nick Walker - Paris

It was interesting to see the cultural differences, as some UK die hard fans crossed the Channel to sleep overnight in front of the gallery, while French people turned up later in the afternoon.

While wandering in Paris, Nick Walker also stopped by to put a stencil featuring a new female vandal character, admiring red paint on her Lauboutins boots. In broad daylight and in front of bemused passer-by.

Celebrating both the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, the  MBW show will take place end of July in central London, opposite the British Museum.  Needless to say that the building is massive, known as the former post office.

MBW put up some huge colourful paste-ups around the building with some added  trademark pink paint. Stay tuned for more details.

Barcelona: Jaz solo show

Jaz - Barcelona

Following his participation to the Open Walls Baltimore, Argentinian artist Franco Fasoli aka Jaz recently opened his first European solo show at RAS Gallery in Barcelona, curated by Maximiliano Ruiz and produced by Suben. Through a broad selection of works on paper and large scale canvases, the new body of work focuses on the duality of elements, clashes of forces with a mix of constellations.

A large scale mural depicting a confrontation between two giant bears adorns the back wall of the gallery. The energy coming out of the artworks is very powerful  and balanced by a mastering technique of spray paint and use of different material such as tar. In parallel to the show, Jaz also created a large mural in the streets of Barcelona.

Featuring female figures wearing tight shiny catsuit with animal hats, sometimes a  horse, a cat, a wolf or squirrels, Herakut masters  spray paint to create hyperealist portraits. Looking closer, one can even see the artists reflection in the subject’s eyes.
