London: Fragments of Faile

Fragments of Faile

Brooklyn based duo of Patrick’s return to London to present their new show at Lazarides Rathbone called “Fragments of Faile“.

The exhibition is split in two series: the first is their trademark juxtaposition of themes and colour blocks, and the second is a brand new direction featuring painting of women with abstract fabric patterns.

London: Sickboy – Heaven and Earth

Sickboy- Heaven and Earth

Initially known for his iconic red and yellow ‘Temples’ sprayed onto wheelie bins and walls across the world, Sickboy returns to London for his second major solo show titled Heaven & Earth. Taking inspiration from Renaissance paintings, religious iconography and surrealist artists like Hieronymus Bosch, Sickboy has spent the last two years building up a new body of work. On large scale paintings with intricate details, religious messages are replaced by Sickboy’s own symbolism and psychedelic world with a positive twist.

A resident pastor appears at various service times around “The Confession Booth” installation, which features collaborative brick works with 12 urban artists like D*Face, Eine, Anthony Lister, Paul Insect, Vhils, Conor Harrington, Xenz, Word to Mother, Will Barras, Eelus, Mudwig and Hush.

On the side, a spray-paint decorated caravan  with his trademark “Temple” greets guests with drinks.

Sickboy has also invited the global public to become part of his show by submitting their anonymous confessions to him, which have been turned into a video installation, entitled CONFESS. The public response has been overwhelming with over 1,000 confessions.

London: Kelsey Brookes – Desires of the Soul

Kelsey Brookes - Desires of the Soul

Californian artist Kelsey Brookes has reinvented psychedelic art for the 21st Century for his UK debut exhibition at The Outsiders.

The geometric lines and colours come directly from the hallucinogenic experiences just before the headache.

Paris: FIAC Coverage

As seen on Arrested Motion.

FIAC 2011 Paris

Following the Frieze week in London (covered here),  I headed off to Paris to visit the FIAC, the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain in Paris at the Grand Palais, host to 168 galleries. While Frieze focuses exclusively on contemporary art, the FIAC also combines early 20th century modern art with the contemporary.

Of interest, Karl Lagerfeld designed the booth of Zurich’s Gallery Gmurzynska for the Rebels curated by Isabelle Bscher and featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol as well as Banksy and Scott Campbell. Also, sales were good as reported by Galerie Perrotin who sold a large-scale painting by Takashi Murakami titledAs The Interdimensional Waves Run Through Me, I Can Distinguish Between The Voices Of Angel And Devil! on the first day for over $2 million.
