Marrakech Biennale 2016 – Tilt ‘Voyage Aller’ installation

French graffiti artist Tilt has been selected for the OFF of the 6th Marrakech Biennale.
During his artistic residency at Jardin Rouge, in collaboration with the Montresso* Art Foundation, Tilt has created an installation entitled ‘Voyage Aller’ (Inbound Trip) featuring a vehicule overloaded with graffiti, composed of half of 404 Peugeot and his roof rack loaded with objects brought back from the Occident to the Orient.

Having traveled the world since 1988, Tilt has questioned the viewer about the expectations and prejudices, about our habits and ‘mind sets’, he tracks down the resistance to certain art concepts and proclaims loud and clear his graffiti artist status.

In his thoughts about his participation to the Marrakech Biennale, Tilt continues his questioning about the consequences of the practices and the experimentation in graffiti art, by fetishizing an object, the Peugeot 404 car, out of time, appreciated for its properties regardless of its practical, socials and cultural interests. Tilt sanctifies the object by vandalizing it; he breaks down the unstable and fluctuating barriers of the work of art.

From this, the artist reinterprets and mounts the images of those big summer migration flows on the Maghreb roads and of the meeting between two cultures through the round trip of these migrants, with his own language, graffiti.

The ‘Voyage Aller‘ installation is currently exhibited at L’Blassa, Yougoslavie road, Marrakech until 8 May 2016.

The other half of the installation ‘Voyage Retour‘ will be presented at the museum Les Abattoirs in Toulouse in June 2016, the other side of the same car will be revealed to the public on his return version, with a roof rack loaded with objects brought back from Orient to Occident.

Upcoming: Antony Micallef ‘Raw Intent’ @ Pearl Lam Galleries (Hong Kong)

British artist Antony Micallef (covered) will be opening his first solo show in Asia next week at Pearl Lam Galleries in Hong Kong.

The artist will exhibit a new series of paintings and studies that explore the relationships of the mechanics of artistic intent,
representation, and the use of paint as a material for expressing emotions.

The title of the exhibition, Raw Intent, refers to a seemingly unmediated yet highly conscious process of manipulating the material during the act of painting. By presenting an unidentifiable figure in the painting, the artist intends to trigger the audience’s sympathy. Micallef states his intention: ‘I am interested in that space where the figure almost disintegrates but somehow stays intact, leaving a sense of friction and raw distortion. The medium is celebrated and used in full force in many different ways with many different tools to render life that echoes traces of our emotional field.’

Marrakech Biennale: 360 m2 mural by POES and JO BER

For the Educational Programme of the Marrakech Biennale, French artists POES and JO BER just completed the largest mural in a mixed school in Morocco, painting a monumental 360 sq meters.

For the past four years, Ryane Abdelmouhcine, Headmaster of Tariq Ben Ziad, the largest mixed college of Marrakech with 2200 children, always been creative to motivate and inspire his pupils, hence the numerous sport trophies won by his children during his tenure. He got in touch with Abdelhamid Bousaadi from the Marrakech Biennale to express his vision and how his school could be involved during the Biennale. Together with the funding of the MONTRESSO* ART FOUNDATION and the support of Hanaf and Colorado, this extraordinary project came to light.

Poes & Jo Ber Mural - The Game of Life

POES and JO BER worked together to create a revisited version of the infamous board game “The game of Life” created by Milton Bradley in 1861 and popular in the 90s.

The monumental artwork is designed to look like a video game. The Master of the game with robotic features invites the children in a playful world, with joyful characters and colourful experience. The adventure of Life goes through different seasons, starting in the spring with a growing tree of knowledge. The summer will be the time to escape and relax. The arrival of autumn reveals stairs, levels where they can gain additional knowledge. As winter comes, so does the snow and the urge to reach for the stars, and become a cosmonaut!

Through the seasons and cycle of life, artists POES and JO BER deeply desire to provide children of the college Tarik Ibn Ziad a joyful and creative vision of life based on knowledge.

Sign of cultural openness and that the pupils aspirations and ambitions are supported, regardless of their background and gender, this one of a kind project is already the delight and pride of the boys and girls of the college Tariq Ben Ziad as they pose in front of it.

In parallel both artists POES and JO BER have been working with 30 pupils to create a collaborative 2 x 10 meters within the school.

A huge and comprehensive exhibit of Andy Warhol’s best work, Warhol Icons has opened at the Halcyon Gallery, narrating a layered social and cultural commentary from the mass consumerism society, music, politics to the celebrity culture.

Following a three years complex process the Halcyon Gallery has been gathering a significant collection from all over the world featuring over 100 pieces by collecting portfolios, key works and never-before-seen works.

Unique in its breadth, the exhibition spans over three floors and retraces Warhol’s career across three decades, from his early illustrative works of the 1950s through to the iconic works of the late 1980s. Creating a visual experience with an explosion of colours, forms and ideas, it gives viewers the opportunity to see original works on canvas, paper and some of his most important portfolios.

The mezzanine space in the gallery has been rearranged to display Campbell’s Soup I installation, as a tribute to Warhol’s first exhibition with Irving Blum in 1962, where his famous soup can paintings were displayed in the gallery to represent the supermarket shelves on which the soup cans were stored.

Five of the artist’s other famous portfolios from 10 have also been displayed including Cowboys and Indians and Endangered Species, looking at the nature of conservation and how Warhol viewed the environment – a lasting concern for the artist who frequently liked to bring these views into his works on the subject.

His classic 1981 signed Myths Invitations – with images of fantasy icons the Wicked Witch of the West, Santa Claus, Mammy from Gone with the Wind, Superman, Garbo, Uncle Sam, Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doodie, Boris Karloff – is one of many of his most recognisable pieces on show.

Warhol’s fascination with the celebrity is illustrated by his colourful portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Mick Jagger, Muhammad Ali, Ingrid Bergman or within one of his rare Self Portrait in Fright Wig.

D*Face - Misprints and Misfits

StolenSpace Gallery is hosting an exhibition called ‘Misprints & Misfits’, featuring a series of one off paper pieces by D*Face, from the deepest depths of D*Face’s print archives.
