London: Juliette Losq – Nemora @ FAS

The British artist Juliette Losq just opened her solo show Nemora at Fine Art Society in London. Inspired by English ‘Gothic’ of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Losq depicts liminal landscapes by juxtaposing rococo prints, Victorian newspaper illustrations, sci- fi and horror films, as well as detritus. Working over the surface repetitively, multiple painted layers simultaneously obscure and reveal those beneath. In parallel to her mixed media paintings, Juliette Hosq has created three site specific installation works including a piece that revisits the gallery’s historic ground floor fireplace. Another work will features a 3m high wave of painted paper tumble from an antique grandfather clock.

Paris Streets: Invader ‘Picasso’

During the summer Space Invader put up a new piece featuring a large pixelated portrait of Pablo Picasso. As always, placement is key, and it can be seen close to the Musee Picasso in Paris.

The artist’s instagram account also features the piece being created.

London: Phlegm at the Royal Opera House

UK based artist Phlegm is collaborating with the Royal Opera House in London Covent Garden this month. We followed Phlegm as he created a large scale outdoor installation for the Festival of Myth curated by Minna Moore Ede of the National Gallery and the Royal Ballet, which will be on display until September 28. Influenced by the Greek myths, Prometheus and Leda and the Swan, cut out wooden panels build an imposing sculptural fortress that stands tall on the piazza entrance to the opera house, and Phlegm’s signature characters blend harmoniously with mythological figures.

Phlegm also painted a large mural on the inside of the opera house depicting a tree hung with smoldering objects and entangled with celestial orbs, which will be up for at least the next year. A series of nine hand made coper etching are also displayed next to his indoor mural.

London: Reka / Twoone @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace Gallery is opening the new season in London with two concurrent solo shows from Australian artists based in Berlin: Reka’s “Trip the Light” and Two One’s “The Hunted Hunter’s Head.”

Reka’s new body of work is inspired by his mother who was a ballerina. His brushstrokes reflect the graceful movements of a female dancer though a monochrome palette. Referenced in John Milton’s 1645 poem L’Allegro, to “trip the light fantastic” alludes to those who dance without inhibition.

In parallel Reka has given a new life to disused rusted spray cans found throughout his adventures and repurposed them into new works of art.

Japanese born Hiroyasu Tsuri aka Two One emigrated to Australia before relocating recently to Berlin. Continuing his ongoing series that he calls “Psychological Portrait”, Two One uses patterns and human-animal hybrids portraits to show more of the inner character and personality.

London Streets: Eelus

UK based artist Eelus (interviewed here) has returned to East London with a new stencil depicting a female angel. It can be seen on Hanbury Street. Eelus fans will be pleased to know that he will be showing some new works at the upcoming Moniker Art Fair next month.
