Studio Visit: Nick Walker

Nick Walker - Studio Visit 2015
Ahead of his upcoming solo show ‘Entrophy’ at Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong, we popped by the studio of Bristol artist Nick Walker.

For this new show, Nick Walker has been exploring new ideas and broadening the scope of his signature Gentleman Vandal series to more abstract imagery and new techniques playing with metal and sculpture.

“A new element I am exploring with this show is ‘Numbers’ which I call the Smoke series. Originally I was inspired by Jasper Johns some time back and began to implement numbers into my paintings as background or fragmented, but now I am focusing solely on the numbers themselves.”

Having visited Hong Kong in December to gather inspiration and collect photos some new pieces featuring the Hong Kong busy urban landscape, Nick Walker mentions “It [has] an abundance of old signage and history, and also a very gritty edge which is something I love to portray in my street scenes.”

Studio Visit: Borondo – “Animal” @ RexRomae

Borondo - Studio Visit 'Animal'

We visited the studio of prolific Spanish artist Gonzalo Borondo ahead of his upcoming solo exhibition “Animal”.  Curated by Rom Levy, founder of  RexRomae, and Charlotte Dutoit of Justkids, the show will be set up at the London Newcastle Project Space in Shoreditch . It’s Borondo’s most ambitious show to date and the atmosphere in the studio is buzzing and fun. Prolific is an euphemism when we see the variety of techniques and medium used: wood, mesh, glass, videos and so on…

The comprehensive body of work ranges from his signature paintings on glass and raw classical paintings on wood to collaboration with Carmen Maín (ES) on video installations and impressive sculptural installations with Edoardo Tresoldi (IT) and Despina Charitonidi (GR). Focussing on “the conflict between our innate animal instincts and our present lives, which are coated with the dependence of technology and our fear for the unknown”, Borondo invites the viewer to a sensory journey through eight thematic spaces, exploring the relationships between human beings and nature. Humans  try to tame nature and control everything around them through technology in the delusional hope to reach immortality instead of embracing the wildness and freedom that nature has to offer.  And as a bonus for those attending the opening night on 5 February, a limited edition signed screen-print entitled “Fake Paradise” will be released.

Studio Visit: Pimax (Paris)

PIMAX Studio Visit

We popped by the studio of Parisian artist Pimax as he prepares for his upcoming group show ‘GOLDO Expo’ at  Galerie Sakura.

The studio space which used to store graves is surrounded by giant spraycans, a lifesize dummy policeman, as well as melting sculptures and toys, king kong sculptures with rubicube twin towers.

Addicted to the 80’s Japanese manga TV series Goldorak, Pimax created his signature icon ‘Goldofuck’, a figurine portrayed in every possible situation. From stencils, paintings to resine casts, Pimax experiments with multiple supports.

Pimax also enjoys reinterpreting objects from the pop and manga culture into colourful melting sculptures.  His ‘Impressionourf’ painting series is a tribute to the Impressionnism movement with his own twist.

Studio Visit: 100TAUR (Toulouse)

100TAUR - Studio Visit

Following his group shows in the US and recent installation at the Toulouse Museum (FR), we visited the cabinet of curiosities of Low Brow French artist 100taur as he prepares for his upcoming solo show ‘Monsters in my closet’ at the Artoyz gallery in Paris.

100taur is a multidisciplinary artist, whose creativity expands from graffiti, paintings, drawings, engraving to sculpture, installations and taxidermy. His sources of inspiration come from Greek mythology, hybrid creatures like Chiron, known for his kindness, knowledge and skills with medicine, but also Japanese culture and sci-fi and horror films. Passionate by the natural world, 100taur also studies and breeds insects that he draws with the ultimate details.

100taur’s fantastic world is full of happy monsters, multi-eyed slugs and hybrid creatures that seems to be floating and dancing within an oniric universe, while some pop classics like Sponge Bob are  reinterpreted with his own personal touch.
