London: Angela Lizon – Menagerie

Angela Lizon - Menagerie

Bristol based artist Angela Lizon is currently showing her ‘Menagerie’ in London at Gallery 8 with Coates and Scarry. Her intricate oil paintings combine porcelain works, oversized cats and pugs wearing various ornaments and paper doily collar, and also feature a series of children set in a vintage like photograph style. Through her paintings, Lizon gives her subjects new experiences and narratives with a clever sense of humour.

Stolenspace is currently presenting a duo show with British artist and craftsman Ben Turnbull and Spanish illustrative artist Ramon Maiden. In the Gallery 1, ‘Smells like Teens spirit‘ continues the series  of Ben Turnbull’s  ‘American History X’, focussing on the lone teen shooter phenomenon that occurred in the US for the past decade.

Guns & weapons are beautifully and intricately hand carved into vintage wooden school desks. ‘Emergency Break Glass’ boxes contain firearms and grenades highlighting the paradox of the U.S. gun culture.

London: David Shillinglaw – ‘ You are here’ @ Scream

David Shillinglaw

UK artist David Shillinglaw just opened a new solo exhibition entitled ‘You are here’ at Scream Gallery in London.

A large crowd gathered to see the recreation of the studio space of the artist like an exploration of his creative mind and enjoyed the new body of work on canvas, paper and wood, featuring symbols and typography with David Shillinglaw’s signature sunny colour palette.  Also brightening up the evening was performance artist Pandemonia present amongst the guests.

Talking about the show, David Shillinglaw mentions:  ‘Inspired by the relationship we all have with the ideas of being physically/geographically lost, and lost within our own imagination/spirituality. The overriding theme being that its ok to get lost, we all are from time to time, and in fact the process of getting lost goes hand in hand with discovery. We used to find short cuts, we used to draw maps. No we are all guilty of relying on sat-nav and following computer generated pins that lead us to where we want to go. While around us the environment (especially in the city/ especially in London) grow at an alarming rate. Add to that map millions of people, colliding and bumbling around, we are lost in a labyrinth we are convinced has been created for us.’

Reminiscent of the roaring 1920’s where artists were heavily influenced by Diaghilev & the Ballets Russes and vice versa, Street Art is now taking a growing place in Contemporary ballets. New York collective Faile and French artist JR (see here) collaborated with the New York City Ballets on numerous occasions.

In an unprecedented world premiere, ballet and guerrilla “street art” collide as US most sought after choreographer Justin Peck and visual artist Shepard Fairey join forces for Heatscape with the Miami City Ballet, an entirely new exploration of movement, music, costuming and art design. The back drop features Obey Giant’s iconography with a mandala and signature colours red / white/ black colours.
