Studio Visit: Nick Walker

Ahead of his upcoming solo show ‘Entrophy’ at Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong, we popped by the studio of Bristol artist Nick Walker.

For this new show, Nick Walker has been exploring new ideas and broadening the scope of his signature Gentleman Vandal series to more abstract imagery and new techniques playing with metal and sculpture.

“A new element I am exploring with this show is ‘Numbers’ which I call the Smoke series. Originally I was inspired by Jasper Johns some time back and began to implement numbers into my paintings as background or fragmented, but now I am focusing solely on the numbers themselves.”

Having visited Hong Kong in December to gather inspiration and collect photos some new pieces featuring the Hong Kong busy urban landscape, Nick Walker mentions “It [has] an abundance of old signage and history, and also a very gritty edge which is something I love to portray in my street scenes.”

Upcoming: Nuart Festival 15

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Nuart Festival (see last year coverage here) will take place on the first week of September, 2015 in Norway. Renowned artists from around the world will come to the city of Stavanger with murals, installations and interventions and Tou Scene centre for contemporary arts, a former 19th century brewery, will host the festival’s indoor exhibition.

Nuart Festival 2015 artists include: Bordalo II (PT), Bortusk Leer (UK), Dolk (NO), Dotdotdot (NO), Ella & Pitr (FR), Ernest Zacharevic (LT), Futura (US), Harmen de Hoop (NL), Icy & Sot (IL), Isaac Cordal (ES), Jamie Reid (UK), Martha Cooper (US), Martin Whatson (NO), Outings Project (FR), Pejac (ES), Pixelpancho (IT).

Nuart will also attempting to create the world’s largest outdoor mural of 21,000m2 in Klepp on the outskirts of Stavanger with French artists Ella & Pitr alongside partners Block Berge Bygg. In parallel, Sandra Chevrier (CA) will be introducing the Aftenblad Wall.

Nuart Plus, the festival’s annual symposium of academic and industry debates, artist presentations and film screenings will take place at Scandic Stavanger City hotel from Thursday 3 – Saturday 5 September. Here, key figures such as Evan Pricco (Juxtapoz), Jaime Rojo and Steven Harrington (Brooklyn Street Art) and critic and author Carlo McCormick will come together with artists and academics to delve into the culture’s roots and reflect on its place within the wider contemporary art canon.
Alongside the recurrent theme of Situationism, this year’s festival will explore notions of play and the ludic tendencies within street art and urban culture. From Jamie Reid – pioneer of the punk visual aesthetic – to conceptual artist Harmen de Hoop, photographer Martha Cooper and abstract graffiti pioneer Futura, leading practitioners from across the spectrum of street art will demonstrate how they approach their craft within the subject of play.

Malaga: Remed & Okuda at MAUS 2015

For the second edition of the MAUS festival in Malaga (Malaga Arte Urbane en el Soho) curated by Fer Francés, many international artists have been invited to paint in the Soho district and along the Guadalmedina river.
Remed and Okuda painted a 30 meters high Venus on the facade of the Hotel Bahia Malaga, mixing their signature colourful style.

The mural is entitled ‘La Danse de Venus et du Marin’.

Along the river each of the artists also created further artworks, both typographic as well as figurative.

Cannes : Daniel Arsham – Future Relic 3

American artist Daniel Arsham is presenting his third instaltment of his ‘Future Relics’ series at the 68th Film Festival in Cannes. The short film features actress Juliette Lewis

In parallel to the screening an exhibition ‘Future Relic 3‘ is displayed at the Club Albane at the Marriott, presenting relic items from the film industry era including film camera, microphones to videotapes.

London: David Shillinglaw – ‘ You are here’ @ Scream

UK artist David Shillinglaw just opened a new solo exhibition entitled ‘You are here’ at Scream Gallery in London.

A large crowd gathered to see the recreation of the studio space of the artist like an exploration of his creative mind and enjoyed the new body of work on canvas, paper and wood, featuring symbols and typography with David Shillinglaw’s signature sunny colour palette. Also brightening up the evening was performance artist Pandemonia present amongst the guests.

Talking about the show, David Shillinglaw mentions: ‘Inspired by the relationship we all have with the ideas of being physically/geographically lost, and lost within our own imagination/spirituality. The overriding theme being that its ok to get lost, we all are from time to time, and in fact the process of getting lost goes hand in hand with discovery. We used to find short cuts, we used to draw maps. No we are all guilty of relying on sat-nav and following computer generated pins that lead us to where we want to go. While around us the environment (especially in the city/ especially in London) grow at an alarming rate. Add to that map millions of people, colliding and bumbling around, we are lost in a labyrinth we are convinced has been created for us.’
