London: Seen Superheroes @ Opera Gallery

The world renowned ‘Godfather of Graffiti’ SEEN is currently showing at the Opera Gallery in London. The exhibition takes inspiration from the ever-growing American comic book cultural phenomenon. Colourful large scale paintings depict the world’s most iconic crime fighters and villains, including Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Captain America and Spiderman.

Some superheroes were also attending the opening with SEEN who was happily chatting and signing posters for delighted guests.

Since beginning his career by painting on New York Subway trains in the 1970s, SEEN has used different mediums in his work from canvas, 3D sculpture, mixed media and even tattooing. SEEN has inspired so many generations of artists and is also credited with pioneering the transition of urban art moving from the streets into the contemporary art world by showcasing in major galleries and museums worldwide.

After Bristol, the touring exhibition of Jessica Albarn (covered here) is now showing in London at Lawrence Alkin Gallery. Resurrection showcases a series of works on canvas, paper, glass, wax and clay about the lost beauty of the dead, treasuring the extinct, rare and endangered in our natural world.

London: Richard Jackson – New Paintings @ Hauser Wirth

Los Angeles-based artist Richard Jackson just opened an exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in London. Inspired by abstract expressionism and action painting, Jackson has created dynamic sculptures around which paint is thrown or shot out loosely. An installation features a row of sculptures of men bending over forwards with their trousers at their ankles, aiming their rears at the wall. Upon activation of Jackson’s device, paint squirted out of each of their rear ends, staining the wall.

Another installation, “Shower Room” (2013), show smeared paint inside a shower room, with an uncanny resemblance to blood, reminding of a reconstitution of the shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”

London: Miaz Brothers @ Lazarides

Miaz Brothers - Dematerialized

Italian contemporary painters Miaz Brothers debuted their UK solo exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone titled Dematerialized: A New Contemporary Vision.

The show features a selection of large portrait paintings from their Antimatter series, utilizing the layering of spraypaint to create a special blurry effect. Looking close, the paintings look abstract, but from a distance, portraits are revealed. A selection of sculptures are also on display.

London Streets: Olek

Polish artist Olek just completed a 26ft crocheted mural on Corbett Place by the Truman Brewery in East London. With her signature intricate and colourful patterns, an embroidered message says Let’s not get caught, Let’s keep going, a quote from Thelma and Louise‘s movie. Olek didn’t get caught and even managed to find time for a tango.
